Our History
Joseph S. Tairiol, an Italian immigrant, founded The J.S. Tairiol Company on December 26, 1920 in Weirton, West Virginia. After settling in the Ohio Valley, Joe saw an opportunity with the newly formed Weirton Steel Company and began buying and selling real estate to a wide range of individuals helping to fuel the growing community. Almost over night, the town of Weirton, situated on the Ohio River and bordering Ohio and Pennsylvania, was born as a prospering industrial center.
Quickly, Joe expanded The J.S. Tairiol Company by offering insurance and financial products to his real estate clients as an added service. As Weirton grew from a small town to a major West Virginia city, so did The J.S. Tairiol Company.
Despite the uncertain business climate of the 1920’s, Joe was adamant about protecting and educating his clients from risk, providing the foundation for our mission today – To protect our clients from the financial consequences of an accidental loss.
In 1990, the J.S. Tairiol name was changed to Assure America Corporation as the company began to grow into a regional insurance agency serving clients in multiple states. As a testament to our tenure, the checking account that was opened in 1920 remains in use today, along with a copy of the original signature card.
Joe’s business philosophy was one built on honesty, fairness and a sense of community. Everyone Joe met was treated with respect and made to feel welcome as a friend.
While we operate in an impersonal, electronic environment today, the values that Joe laid as the cornerstone of the business are still practiced by the third generation of family and employees at Assure America.
Joe would have been proud of the growth and success of his company but more proud of the character and integrity that remain in place today.
