Salvation Army Close to Wrapping up Project

12/1/2012

WEIRTON, W.Va.—

The Salvation Army has been working in recent months on repairs to the organizations campus, and, with the help of local businesses, the work is expected to be complete soon.

Earlier this year, the Weirton Corps. of the Salvation Army had received $242,500 in grants, with a requirement of raising $25,000 in local funds as a match. The funding is being put toward repairs to the Quonset hut used by the Salvation Army for a variety of events.

On Nov. 14, Assure America contributed $500 toward that match.

Captain Ed Long said the work on the roof of the Quonset hut is near completion.

All of the funds needed to be raised locally to match what was given for the project has come to a head thanks to Assure America, Long said. Wed also like to thank the board members and the Corps for doing what they could to assist with the project. It has all come a long way and is looking good.

Long said the interior still needs some work, but with Christmas right around the corner, they will need the space for the distribution. He said he hoped the ceiling, floors and other interior items would be done, but they will have to wait until after the holiday.

Long said the new upstairs bathroom in the Quonset hut is complete and handicap accessible and the kitchen is about 80 percent finished.

He said they still are waiting for some materials to come in to complete the project.

The Weirton Salvation Army will host a re-dedication ceremony in the spring.
