WEIRTON – The Weirton Salvation Army is gearing up for the observance of Make A Difference Day Oct. 27, and is in the process of holding a food drive as part of its activities.

This year’s theme is “Take a bag of nothing and make a bag of something.”

“This is a day set aside to perform a service project as individuals or groups that will have a positive impact on the community,” Brenda Greathouse, social services director, explained.

The Salvation Army has place decorated grocery bags in area businesses to assist in the collection of food donations. The bag includes a list of suggested food items needed in the Salvation Army’s food pantry.

Among those businesses lending a hand to the Make A Difference Day activities are Assure America and  Stained Glass Unlimited and Crafts. Collection bags are located at both businesses.

Assure America serves the community through three different locations and 16 employees. The Weirton office is located at 3546 Pennsylvania Ave. They are able to meet all types of insurance needs whether individual or business.

“We thank the staff of Assure America for assisting us in restocking our pantry and making a difference in our community,” Greathouse said.

Stained Glass Unlimited, located at 402 Penco Road, Weirton, specialized in stained glass items. The shop also features homemade crafts, custom-made country furniture and jewelry. They also offer free appraisals. Repairs can also be done.

“We encourage our customers to sop in and donate food items for the decorated grocery bags place in our store,” owner Margaret Sharrow said. “We want to help the food pantry meet the needs of others.”

Food donations can be delivered to the Weirton Salvation Army at 796 Cove Road. Residents also can schedule a collection of the bags by contacting the Salvation Army at (304) 748-3310.
