Tree Lighting Brings in Holidays

The holiday season will be kicking off in Weirton Saturday with the lighting of the official Community Christmas Tree.

A ceremony is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, where the tree will reside during the holiday season. A tradition in the community for many years, the idea of a community tree was revived by Mayor Harold Miller in 2016.

The tree lighting will feature entertainment, refreshments and a fireworks display, so we encourage area residents to consider attending as it should be a great event and a nice way to help usher in the Christmas celebrations.

This year’s festivities also will include the unveiling of a new commemorative tree ornament, developed by Renaissance Weirton and sponsored by Felici Insurance. Proceeds from the sale of the ornament, which celebrates the city of Weirton’s 70th anniversary, will benefit the Striplight Theatre Co., with plans for additional ornaments each year to assist other local organizations.

A round of thanks is extended to Iannetti’s Garden Center, which is donating this year’s tree. The tree also is being dedicated in memory of Nick Iannetti, owner of the business who died recently.

The assistance of ArcelorMittal Steel also is appreciated for this endeavor, as the steel manufacturer is allowing the use of its property for the tree.

Support also has been provided by the Thrasher Group, Assure America, Nick’s Auto Sales and Guida Law Offices, the Law Offices of Dittmar, Taylor and Makricostas, Gurrera Law Offices, Granato’s Deli, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Bubba’s Wings, Councilman Tim Connell and Chris Connell, Mary Jo and Herb Ross, Fran Sullivan and Pat Nosko.
